Animal Sanctuaries
CAPT recognises that while some animals remain in captivity there
are many reputable sanctuaries working to provide the best possible
care for those animals. CAPT supports sanctuaries which not only
have a recognised level of good animal welfare (e.g. providing as
much as possible for the physical and behavioural needs of the animals)
but also do not breed animals; and which work to end the captivity
and abuse of animals for entertainment.
Listed below are some of the sanctuaries that CAPT believes meets
these principles.
The Elephant Sanctuary
http://www.elephants.com/
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, USA, is America’s largest
natural-habitat refuge developed specifically to meet the needs
of endangered elephants. It is a non-profit organisation, designed
specifically for old, sick or needy elephants who have been
retired from zoos and circuses. Utilising more than 2700 acres, it
provides two separate and protected natural habitat environments
for Asian and African elephants. The Sanctuary says: “Our residents
are not required to perform or entertain for the public; instead,
they are encouraged to live like elephants.”
The Monkey Sanctuary Trust
http://www.monkeysanctuary.org
The Monkey Sanctuary Trust is an environmental charity based at The
Monkey Sanctuary in Cornwall, England - home to a social colony of
woolly monkeys and a group of rescued ex-pet capuchin monkeys. The
Trust provides advice and support for primate rescue centres around
the world as well as working to end the primate trade and abuse of
primates in captivity.
PAWS – Performing Animal Welfare Society
http://www.pawsweb.org/
A US sanctuary specialising in rescuing and caring for wild animals
kept as ‘exotic pets’ or used in ‘entertainment’.
Founded by former Hollywood animal trainer and author, Pat Derby,
and partner, Ed Stewart, PAWS maintains 3 sanctuaries for captive
wildlife in California - 30 acres in Galt, the 100-acre Amanda Blake
Wildlife Refuge in Herald, and ARK2000, 2300 acres of beautiful natural
habitat in San Andreas.
Tower Hill Stables Animal Sanctuary
http://www.towerhillstables.com/
Based in Essex, England, this privately run sanctuary was formed
in 1993 by Fiona Oakes. Fiona could be described as the animals’ Wonder
Woman – not only does she run the sanctuary almost single-handedly
as well as working as a retained firefighter, she somehow finds time
to run marathons around the world. Fiona must be one of the best
adverts for a vegan diet there has ever been!
